‘Austin Powers’ Actor Convicted of Torture in 1990 Rape Case

Joseph Hyungmin SonJoseph Hyungmin Son, 40, best known for playing shoe-hurling villain Random Task in “Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery,” has been convicted of torture in the 1990 Christmas Eve gang rape of an Orange County, California woman.

The 20-year-old victim was walking her dog and looking at Christmas lights when she was abducted. No arrests were made for years until Son was required to provide a DNA sample in 2008 in connection with a separate vandalism sentence.

Son, along with a second accomplice pulled the victim into a car and drove her to Huntington Beach as they assualted her with a gun and raped her before she was released naked with her pants tied around her eyes.

Son was initially charged with multiple sexual assault charges and faced a maximum sentence of 275 years to life in prison. However, many of those charges were dropped because the statute of limitations had expired.

A co-defendant in the case pleaded guilty to rape, kidnapping and other charges, and was sentenced to 17 years and four months in prison.

Son faces a maximum of 15 years to life in prison when he’s sentenced on September 19.
