27 year old Wilfredo Franco is being held on $1.25 million bail for allegedly threatening someone with a gun then fleeing police resulting in the accident that sent patrol lieutenant Luiz Casanova to the hospital.
Superior Court Judge Brian Fischer set the high bail for Franco, calling the charges against him “very, very serious.”
On July 23 Police allege that Franco shot his half-brother at his family’s home and on Saturday, he confronted a man at gunpoint and Franco fired at him before fleeing.
Later on Saturday, Franco allegedly fled New Haven police who were trying to apprehend him, leading police on a chase that ended when he crashed into Casanova’s police vehicle.
Police had been searching for Franco since last week when he allegedly led police on a previous high-speed chase, before abandoning his car and eluding police.
Court officials noted that Franco has prior convictions on weapons counts, sale of narcotics, and owed seven years of a suspended sentence for first-degree escape.
Outside court, Franco’s family accused New Haven police of beating Franco after being handcuffed following a serious crash that sent police Lt. Casanova to the hospital, where he was treated and released.
Family members stated that after the crash, Franco got out of the vehicle and surrendered without resistance.
His family had hired defense attorney Tara Knight to represent him.
